Girly softie dolls

Last summer I made a few illustrations in aquarelle technique. I needed some images to use for the girls and boys tee shirts for the shop. So, I had to convert those aquarelles into the vector files to be screen printed on the shirts and my final result was the simple drawing of the girl (later to become 2 girls, as on the following picture) and a simple dinosaur for the boys.

I've also uploaded the drawings into my Spoonflower account and turned them into a fabric. Here are the girls and here are the dinos (not yet available for purchase). So the girls on fabric arrived while we were away and it was the first thing I had to sew in this new Year. The dolls for my girls;)
Of course, the fabric can be used for other purposes, but after the lovely teddy bears softies, they wanted the softie dolls;)

There are 8 dolls fitting one fat quarter, so if you are sewing them as dolls, you may choose to create 4 reversible dolls(using all 8 dolls) or 8 if using one doll for one side and some other fabric as the back, other side of the doll.

If choosing the option of creating the reversible doll, here is how I did it, you may call it tutorial, as well;)
First of all, wash the fabric(or fabrics) and iron it.
Using the window and day light, and folding the fabric, right sides together, in way that you can see 2 dolls through - one over another, pin the fabrics.

Cut the doll shapes, here are 2 ways you may cut, getting more or less of the white space

Sew the dolls using 1 cm (1/2") seam allowances, leaving the bottom gap open that will allow turning the doll inside out

Fill the dolls with stuffing

Hand stitch the opening gap closed, and you are done;)

Recalling memories

Another year coming to an end and it somehow evokes the memories, not only of the year 2011. (that was really hard on some fields), but also of the years before this one. I've started with this blog 4 years ago (once I realized that it may be a good way to practice my English and not being intimidated when making mistakes;) as my "behind the scenes" regarding my creative happenings, in different fields. A bit before that, some 5.5 years ago I discovered the amazing world on eBay in the category of custom, boutique clothes for kids. It was the category for selling handmade clothes for kids that only on US eBay existed. So, I've started selling some clothes under flowers and butterflies name and I was amazed by the community behind that particular category of sellers, women, mainly working from homes, creating some gorgeous items for kids. There were forums, eBay groups, theme launches and I had the pleasure to be part of those happenings, making some wonderful "on-line" friendships and learning so many things. Anyway, eBay was a wonderful place to be and sell, until they changed some policies and fees and many sellers moved from eBay to etsy after the ebay Strike. Many things changed and many talented women moved from that kind of "business" to photography, textile design field, pattern design field and grow a career.

So, recalling the memories from the good ole eBay period, here are some of my very first designs and creations (2006-2008), dedicated to the Xmas theme. Marta was my only model (Bianka was a baby) and she hated it, LOL. Can you tell it from the expressions of her face?

A little bit over 20 days left till Xmas. I like this period, thinking about decorating and enjoying decorations and ornaments.

I love thinking about gift giving and all what goes with it...presents, wrapping, bows, cards etc...

Each year I think about making downloadable illustrations x tags, cards etc., but time is never enough for everything. Well, next year, hopefully. But I just love these little kraft tags I made last year

You may have noticed that I am lately participating quite often in Spoonflower's week contests and this week the theme is - kites (small size prints).
Here is my new entry for the Kites contest, that made it into the top ten finalists;)

Above you may see some neat and simple coordinates-squares, recently added to the Playground collection, just as the kites prints.

And what I am working on now is the boys tie template - cut and sew pattern to be added to my pattern collection. Making boys ties is very easy, but the problem is that the fabric needs to be cut in bias, which sometimes isn't working with all fabrics regarding theirs repeat type-pattern, so I think this may be a good and easy way to create the tie. And to fill better the fat quarter sheet there are 6 pieces that will create a beautiful softie ball. Hope you'll enjoy.

Also, my fabrics (some of them) from the same Playground collection and some bibs are available for purchase in beautiful on-line store in Norway, called Gerd Fjellanger. I am so loving it!!!

Something about years....

First, I have to share this fun little (fitting 1 fat quarter) 2012 Calendar , made for the Spoonflower tea towel calender contest. I used one of my best selling designs, creating this baby inspired calendar, I suppose that it would be perfect for the kids room.

And then, it happens that I am turning 36 today....which reminded me that I should go and make a cake;)

Yellow carpet

This post is all about yellow leaves in fall..... I found them pretty amazing- all the yellowish colours and shades that can be found on the trees and on the ground, just for a very short period of time, in contrast with the blue sunny sky.... can be so refreshing and inspiring during the fall season.

So, here is the mix of this season loveliness and my girls rocking the new skirts while enjoying the yellow carpet;)

Dino fun

I am sure that some of you following my blog, know very well that my son is totally obsessed with Dinosaurs. I think that the only thing that he don't like about them is that they are gone and that they don't exist anymore. And each time we have to see and visit some Dino related stuff and exhibition, he would ask - "But will there be real Dinosaurs?"
Anyway, this image above is the black and white and very stylized version of the Watercolor drawing I made during this summer for the tee shirts, that will be very soon available in the shop. He loves it. And I can't wait to have them. I will certainly have the little giveaway here as soon as they will be ready.

We visited the Dino exhibition organized here, in Belgrade, at UŠĆE, near the Museum of Modern Art and it was very nice. There were 52 life-sized dinosaurs at 16,000 square meters and were made under strict control of experts from Paleontological Institute from Hanover, Germany.

Beside the dinos, it is lovely to see and enjoy all those yellowish fall leaves, isn't it? More yellowish loveliness in my next post;)

Koko birthday party

Last week of October was full of festivities, and the most important one was Pablo's BD party. My boy is seven now and I am so blessed to have him in my life. We now have another small member of the family, arrived as a BD present, she is the guinea pig and kids named her Maza( something that would be translated like molly-coddle).

We had the BD party on Friday with 46 kids and it was hosted in the gorgeous, new place for kids, "Koko" placed within the sports and recreational complex of "Milan Gale Muškatirović" (formerly and better known as "25. maj"), located on the riverside. Here are some pics from the party;)

Baby bib tutorial

During this summer, I created several sewing templates(patterns) and they are available for purchase @ Spoonflower.

Each sheet is created as 18 x 21" large (size of the Fat Quarter) and includes the sewing instructions. So beside the fabric FQ, you will need either Velcro tape for closure or snaps. Also, I would highly recommend using additional fabric for the back sides, like minky, terry cloth, chenille, cotton backing or similar fabric.

Very important thing to do before starting to sew is to wash the fabric, as it will shrink. I also recommend to wash even the fabric that you will be using for backing, as in that way there will no be unpleasant surprises with shrinkage after you get the final product, and as this item is designed for babies, washing fabrics before use is a must do:)

Needed supply:

1. printed fabric sheet with template ( you can use the fabric type you prefer for the design to be printed on like: Quilting Weight Cotton, Organic Cotton Sateen or Organic Cotton Interlock Knit and for the limited time even the great cotton poplin fabric would be perfect)
2. thread, scissors and needle
3. pieces of Velcro or snaps for closure

sewing machine is optional-you can totally stitch it with hand, as it is a small surface;)

So, the fabrics are washed and ironed, ready to be cut & sewn.

To cut the bibs from the fabric template, I recommend the zig zag scissors, as in that way you will have nicer and easier sewing (without further need to eventually trim the pieces). HERE you can find very nice article explaining why trimming the corners in sewing. I must admit that I am not doing this always, (and in the following pictures you will notice that I haven't do that because I used very narrow seam allowance), but with larger curves, it is really the best way.

After cutting the bib from the template, be sure to fold it lengthwise and check if both sides are the same (as the fabric will be shrinked, it is possible to have some minor discrepancies) and if needed, adjust the shape with scissors to obtain the equal sides.

Using the front bib shape, cut the same shape in backing fabric.

If using velcro, in this stage you can sew them in place, if prefer to not have the sewing lines visible, so you will have this situation:

And in this picture you will note the difference between sewing the Velcro at this stage or in the end.

So regarding this detail, choose yourself, but note that sewing the Velcro as the last thing is much easier;) Just sayin'. If you prefer to sew the Velcro at this point, be sure to cover the opposite pieces on the top of each Velcro piece,(that you can remove-strap after turning the bib inside out) as otherwise it will be very hard to turn the bib inside out through the gap( it may get stuck and damage the fabric)

Ok, so you need to place the front and back pieces on the top of each other, right sides together and pin them.

Sew the bib using the max. 1 cm (1/4") seam allowance and leaving the bottom gap open that will allow turning the bib inside out

Now, you can trim the bib (if still haven't) and turn it inside out and press the bib with iron

Stitch the outside of the bib all around, catching the opening closed this way

Sew the Velcro fastening at this point(suggested) in rectangular or circular shape upon preferences or apply the snap buttons on the marks (be sure that they will match properly-one side with another when the bib is connected)

Done:)

So, my exhibition is officially over and here I am at the sort of the beginning.
My back is killing me and I will hardly recover from dragging the big, heavy drawings from one place to another one. A big THANKS to my helpers:)
I suppose that I should continue with the regular everyday stuff and different creations, mainly in fabric and some computer work, and I will, but until the next post here is something totally worth of posting.

my WONDERLAND

On Tuesday, I will be opening my 6th solo exhibition. I will be exhibiting drawings from my "Wonderland" series.

I have prepared the drawings for this exhibition during the last summer , based on the photographs by my friend, Piki made during this photo session for my Alice costume and I am so happy to be able to show off them in Belgrade's main street, in the "Singidunum" gallery. If you live in Belgrade, it would be lovely if you can join us on the opening. The exhibition will have 10 days duration.

Here's something more about the drawings:

Works from the series "Wonderland" are inspired by the famous novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), written by the English writer Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll.
Drawings "Wonderland" are made during the 2010. and are done in a combined technique: charcoal, ink, tempera, collage on paper, fabric, thread and are approx. 100 x 70 cm in size.
Drawings have the figure as the light-theme, which dominates the composition, while pulling on them unobtrusive forms of ill-defined space, a certain animal silhouettes, cage, cards, teapots and cups. The figure is mainly created in the traditional method of charcoal on paper and it is almost realistic in treatment, which comes in contrast with the surrounding, which is usually unrealistic, and sometimes even extremely simple and almost two-dimensional. In addition to get the Wonderland components altogether and to integrate the prevalent ideas from the novel, some parts of the drawings are children's drawings (for example, some cards and plates) which makes the connection between inspiration, themes, audiences, the unreal with real world, and in a way achieves the combination of two worlds that are very evident in the novel. Just as Carroll's "Wonderland" which is not another world, but just this world, seen through the eyes of the child, my "Wonderland" is created using some kind of children's views of things. Therefore some shapes and pieces are original children drawings, spontaneously embedded with other materials, different textures and parts, stitched/sewn elements, all with the aim of enriching the visual composition through the essential aesthetic elements: the different values of lines, surfaces and structures.
The idea of growing up through the play and usage of imagination as essential in understanding the adult world, as well as reviewing our own identity in constant contact with other creatures and people are shown here in some way under the theme "tea party", which is interpreted through the transition from one dimension to another and from one world to another, as well through an innocent "child's play" with the different objects and in mimicking habits, rules, and generally, the adult’s world.
With the interpretation of the idea of captivity in another world, somewhere
between reality and dream, and with a note of nostalgia, these “Wonderland” drawings were created.

Tulle skirts fun

Yesterday, I snapped a few shoots of the new tulle skirts I made for the SHOP, enjoying some of the last hot summer days of this year.

It always makes me smile when my oldest, after I take a few pics says: " Can you take the pics of me jumping?" Ever since my friend, Piki took some professional pics of her jumping for my poor neglected website (and to follow is the evidence...she had only 4 years and it was 6 years ago), she is obsessed with jumping on the pics.

Teddy bear plushie family

After more than a month, finally my plushies tempate pattern arrived and I immediately had to try it.

I love it and even that those 2 smaller bears needs to be sewn very carefully as they ARE actually pretty small, I must say that it is very easy to cut and sew them. I would honestly change the size of the "arms" making them a bit larger, but it's great to keep those things in mind for the next time;) Now I understand why many dolls and fabric toys have separately inserted things;)

But, kids just love them and already asking for more:)

September clothes

After a long week full of mixed feelings and tears (there have been a few hard days with new school commitments), we are somehow back to "regular schedule". At least I hope. This sort of regular schedule provided some sewing too (for the SHOP ); with the following results;)

I am slowly convincing my self that the summer is gone and therefore my sewing palette will start with some Indian summer tones going to the deeper tones.

There are some neat neckties for boys as well available in the shop, in different, fun prints.

Officially the school started yesterday, but today is Pablo's first school day, after the yesterday's "welcome aboard" party. It is so difficult for me to comprehend that he is not a baby anymore and that now he will have to focus on some other activities, except playing around, which I think will be very hard thing. But, will see. Luckily, his big sister is so patient with him and always glad to help. I am so happy to have my kids and watching them grow in such a wonderful people is giving me so much joy:)

On the other, creative side, I have an event tomorrow to announce where I will be exhibiting some accessories. If you live in the area, please stop by, I hope it will be good.

Lavender strawberry tutorial

Another quick and easy project:) I know that I promised

the bag tutorial first, but I will post that soon as well. I had to make some corrections, to be as clear as possible, so it will come soon;)

Back to this project....lavender is not only among my favourite colours, but plants as well. It smells so good. OK, maybe if you are pregnant, it might be very irritating kind of smell, but in normal conditions, and in my case, it is just wonderful. So, you'll need some dry lavender for this project, depending on how many and how big do you wish these babies to be. Of course, you can always substitute the lavender with the stuffing and make these strawberries to be cute pincushions.

Needed supply:

1. fabric scraps (any kind of fabric will work fine for this project)
2. thread, scissors and needle
3. piece of ribbon
4. embellishments

sewing machine is optional-you can totally stitch it with hand;)

Click on the smaller pictures to obtain the better view;)

To cut the fabric, you will need some kind of the cone shape, like the children paper party hats or like THIS one or like mine on the following picture. You can't go wrong, just be sure to check (by folding it) that the outlines of the cone are consonant with center.
Depending on the size of the cone-strawberry you want to make, you'll be needing more or less fabric, and therefore the outlines of your cone template will be bigger or smaller. My template had 6" (15 cm) outlines.

Cut the fabric, fold it right sides together and using the straight stitch , and 1/4 "(1 cm) seam allowance close the cone. Turn right side out.

Now, you'll need to fill it:). You can use only lavander, but I suggest adding a bit of the stuffing just before closure, that will keep those seeds right in place;)

Here is the small cone which I used to take pics of the rest of the process, so don't be confused;)

Now, you ll need to stitch (use basting stitch if sewing by hand) the upper edge and place the ribbon. Of course, you can do this step even before filling the cone (especially if you will be using the long gathering stitch with your sewing machine, which will be pulled once the cone is filled;)

Once the cone is filled, place the ribbon bight inside, pull the gathering stitches and secure it.

Now, you only need to add the cream on the top:) Use your imagination and embellish it with anything you like- fabric yo-yos, felt leaves, silk leaves, ribbon, buttons, fabric flowers or leaves....or simply with those cute crochet flowers that are very convenient as have the hole in the center, so can be wonderfully placed and stitched on the top-in that way they will not only decorate the strawberry, but will also cover the gathered top edge.

These make great presents!! Who don't need them???You can embroider some things on them or at the felt leaves for example and totally customize them. We did that and make some great strawberry for the teacher kind of presents:)

Summer bites

It is terribly hot these last few days (temperatures are going over 40C, 90F) and so I am trying to make some fresh and quick meals. Our favorite at the moment is the Pasta con zucchini(courgettes) . I changed a few things, but basically with all the yummy, simple and fresh ingredients, it is very tasty dish:) And I am the lover of the nice bites of yummy food that don't require hours spent in the kitchen;) I also love Jamie Oliver recipes and even that I always experiment in the kitchen and are hardly following recipes regarding food, (except for the cakes), it is always nice to get inspired and get some ideas.

As the spoonflower prices are higher than when purchasing regular designer fabrics, I thought that it might be convenient thing to create the ready to cut and sew sets, where you get all in one: fabric, pattern and instructions.
So, there is a section with sewing patterns-templates where you can find them. I will also post here all the step by step instructions with photos once I get the designs.

Remember, this bag? Now, you can buy this template that will allow you to create one bag. Spoonflower post worldwide and you can easily pay through Paypal or with some of the major credit cards (even Serbian;), so it is a great thing!!!
This pattern fits one yard of linen cotton canvas which is a medium weight fabric with lovely texture, suitable for the bag making. It don't have the instructions printed, as I barely managed to fit all the pieces for the bag, without almost any millimeter free(which I think is a neat way to use properly one yard of fabric for one normally sized hand bag without having almost any scrap pieces left;) Those 3 spots you can see in blue, purple and brown, these are left for fabric buttons, eventually;)
I tested this bag pattern and created a lovely birthday present for my sister, Jelena.

If you don't have the experience with sewing bags, you should wait for the all step by step blog post and as I took all the pics in process of making it, I will hopefully, be able to post it soon;)

Also, thinking about babies and baby presents, I have created many sewing templates for baby bibs and can't wait to get them and make some bibs. I used the designs from my Playground collection , suitable for baby boys and girls. I can customize them, so once I test them, I will be able to offer some sort of- you design yourself bib set:)....thinking about the name of the baby etc...

And last, but not least, here is the softie family pattern. It is the fat quarter that will allow you creating 4 softie bears: Mama Bear, Papa Bear and baby boy and girl bear. Mine will arrive any day now (I hope), so that I can blog about it too;)

Toothless boy and a frog

I know that these 2 things don't normally have anything in common, except my boy's recent top concerns.
Well, at this point, the first one was solved by going to the dentist and so we had the Tooth fairy coming for a visit during the last weekend (on August 13 for my memory). The second one regarding the frog is something that was related with his desired prize for the tooth being out(as the new one appeared already inside), as he is totally obsessed with animals, especially with lizards and frogs lately. I suppose that as much as some things may be absolutely yucky for me to understand, as far as those little animals aren't hurt, I'll be happy to obey his wishes and watch him enjoying his childhood. At the end, boys should be boys, right?:)

Paper dolls

When I was a little girl, my favorite game was playing with the paper dolls. I could play for hours, occasionally drawing my own designs and patterns.....
My mom smartly saved some of them and must say that I admire them much more than tons of other new modern dolls.
These retro ones are just the best, want you agree? They are from 1982.

Inspired with them, I made a few drawings that will be used as prints for the tee shirts I am working on. Hope you will like them too:)

Shabby flower tutorial

As promised, here is one easy step by step tutorial for the shabby fabric flower.
I created this fray flower 3 years ago, using remnants and scraps while making Marta's BD dress set, when I took all the pictures with aim to create the tutorial, but unfortunately some things never happen. At least not as firstly planned. But better late than never, right? And speaking about planned tutorials, I have also taken the pictures for the tutorial for these baby shoes and never had time to make the PDF pattern and write the tutorial. Well, some day:)

OK, back to this tutorial.....
If you don't like the fray, raw edges that gives this shabby look, you can perfectly use the 1.5" (4 cm) satin or acetate ribbon. Tulle looks great in this style too. Or even the knit jersey fabric strips to obtain great casual look(this is the great project to use with some old t-shirts that can easily be cut in strips)
You can create these flowers and use them as embellishments for garment pieces and/or accessory pieces, for clips, headbands, shoes, bags etc.
Sewing machine is very helpful, but optional, you can always use the basting stitch, sewing through the center of the fabric strip, leaving each of the thread ends long, pulling and gathering the fabric strip, trying to avoid gaping, creating the ruffled strip. And than you need to stitch it to the felt base, as following...

Needed supply:

1. 2 pieces of fabric cut in strips (around 1.15" x 48" (4 x 120 cm) for one flower, this length will depend on the ruffling) - the best for this project are the cheap polyester lining fabrics (fabrics that imitates silk like crepe, taffeta and satin that will allow nice fray, raw ends)
2. thread and needle
3. piece of felt for the base
4. clip or pin that will be attached to the flower base

To start, you'll need to ruffle the fabric strip. There are many ways to do it, but maybe the simplest with the sewing machine is to either gather with your fingers, ruffling it on your own or by setting the tension wheel on the machine so that one thread will be tighter than the other.

For the bases, you'll need to cut the felt(or other sturdy fabric), upon desired size of the flower. The peachy flowers shown in the first picture are made on the 3"(7 cm) diameter base. You can use any circular jar, plate or similar thing to draw the circle on the base.

Now you need to stitch the ruffled strip to the base, beginning from the edge of the circle going toward the center, creating some kind of the spiral.

Roll it up till reaching the center, cut the eventual remnants of the ruffled strip.

This is the finished flower, both sides.

Now you can attach the clip or whatever you prefer to the base and it's ready:)

Salento vacation

I am still having some Blogger problems, but at least I realised that it is the browser problem related to Firefox, so thanks to Safari, I am able to be back to the blogland:)

After just one week, it seems like we 've been there in some sort of other life, away from reality. Salento region of Puglia is one of the most beautiful regions of Italy, (the heel of the Italian boot) , just along the Ionian sea with beautiful sandy beaches and gorgeous architecture. Long sandy beaches are not among my favourite choices ( I am more pebbles and rocks person) regarding the sea cost, but it was fantastic for kids. The water was really so clean and looking in the crystal water under the sun, spoting the little fishes hunting under the water and the rainbowish reflections on the water, was sort of the inexplicable perfection.
Of course, not only that, but remembering those moments, provide some kind of serendipity and tranquility inside me. I was really enjoying all the colours (all the incredible shades of aquas and peaceful blues), smells, food, my kids happiness and some blissful moments of doing some hand embroidery and doodles. (yay for the friendship bracelets!!! you can even find the free tutorial here)

We visited some nearby cities, like Gallipoli, Manduria, San Marzano, Porto Cesareo and Porto Selvaggio (double gorgeous).

We found so many shells and took them as souvenirs and reminder of another wonderful summer vacation.

Now, it's time to think about some work here;)
I am preparing many free tutorials, so hopefully I'll be back with the first one in a few days.

We are packing for a trip to Italy where we will enjoy the family, sea and sun:)
I have closed my etsy shops until 20. July, so you can eventually buy my fabric through the Spoonflower. I finally got my samples and I can't wait to play with them once we are back home.

You can also like and vote my daughter's (Marta) first fabric uploaded for the kids contest. I must say that I was trilled how she managed to figure some of the Photoshop basic tools, and even that she didn't finish it completely, I enjoy this sort of perfect imperfection. Not to talk about the composition etc;)

The school is over and we are preparing for summer Holidays, as we are going in a few days to Italy:)

Rabbit wallpaper bag

Ever since I got the delivery of my fabric printed @ Spoonflower, on linen-cotton canvas, I wanted to create a new bag for me. I ordered only 1 fat quarter to check the colours, the repeat scale and other details and so my options were a bit limited and I really needed a large bag, so that I can carry even the books or lap top or other bigger things. I wanted it to be in the landscape-horizontal size option, rather than classical messenger bag with the larger size in vertical.
So, after thinking and thinking, the best solution was to rotate the fabric in a rather wrong way, to use that fat quarter entirely for both sides.:) I used the gorgeous Echino stripe fabric for the flap and handles,( the same fabric that I used 2 years ago for creating this coat) and I wanted it to have both hand handles and one bigger shoulder handle that I love most.
Oh, and that cute little fish button is made with the Heather Ross fish fabric to add a bit of whimsy to the top:)
I am more than happy how this bag turned out. I was even thinking of trying to write the tutorial, so maybe you can expect one soon:)

Thanks to Jovana , I was featured in the Serbian "Roditelj i dete"(parent and child) magazine, in March and April. The magazine is dedicated to kids, providing educational, enlightening, creative and fun reading and I was very flattered to be featured there. THANK you Jovana!!!

This month, they publicized an interview/questionnaire with me, talking mainly about my venture into sewing for kids, education, parenthood and other things that are closely associated with my work and family, and mostly how one thing interferes to another. We will open the shop's door today. YAY!!! It will not going to be anything official and big yet, but we are hope to be able to make soon something like that as well;)

This the old chair we bought, made the patchwork fabric and fabric covered buttons and remodelled it. I adore the look. It was inspired with the fantastic squint furniture.

Bambi notebook coming with the pencil is made with 100% recycled and biodegradable paper, it is available for purchase in the store and soon in my etsy Iwannabe shop too, for international shoppers.

As mentioned and shown a few times before, the WannaBe&Toy shop is slowly coming to life. It's been a total madness for a last few weeks here, trying to manage things between decorating and filling the shop with stuff.(not to mention my family and work activities;)
But, the opening of the shop is so close now and it will start working sometimes during the next week, but I will let you know;)

I have opened the blog that will be dedicated only to the shop and will be written in Serbian, but I will post the most important things here as well.

Birthday on ice

Marta turned 10 (it is still so hard to believe that she is ALREADY TEN) on Tuesday. Between many places, she chose to celebrate it on ice, at Kalemegdanska terasa-tvrdjava ice rink, opened in January this year at Kalemgdan.

For me, it was a bit hard to manage between kids on ice and our friends inside the cafe, but kids had a great time. Some of them, had theirs first experience with ice skating(including me, sorry no pics) and it was so much fun!

Inside the "tower" it was pretty cozy, even that the space is rather small for this kind of event, having 30+ kids and 20+ adults.

We even decided to try to make our version of the famous rainbow cake, filling it with different cream and being rather selfish with adding the colorants to the pastry. But it was yummy and kids loved it!!!

Anyway, I can only say all the best about this place and looking forward to go with kids again (they are planning to stay open till 1 April).

I LOVE snow. I don't like winter generally, but snow is just the part of the winter I cherish most. But, snow in the big city is not much fun, except if going to Kalemegdan or in similar green places.

Grazia magazine feature

I was a bit surprised, when a few days ago a friend of mine told me that my plexi ornaments are featured in the Grazia magazine, Serbian edition, January issue.
I suppose that they saw them in the Supermarket concept store and have decided to feature them within this cute little Wish list.

And while I am thinking about creating and adding new shapes and styles of ornaments to my plexi creations, my kids enjoy playing with some of those that still "didn't make it".....(there were some things that should be corrected and I wasn't sure about the real size)...
I hope that I will find some time to adjust the errors and create the small "Tea time" collection soon:)

In 2011.

We are back home and ready to move on:)
We had a wonderful New Years eve, being blessed to share those moments with my DH's family in Italy.

Just like the last year, for me it is both hard and joyful to start the New Year, thinking about what it will bring.
I hope that it will bring happiness, wealth and peace not only to me and my family, but to everyone in this world. I also hope that I will be able to fulfill some ideas, dreams and plans for this year too.

And for the start, it is so great to know that some things, planned 2 years ago are slowly but certainly coming to life.
My best friend is finally opening the shop. The name is WannaBe and Toy, as we decided to share the things for the little ones that will not only be clothes, but toys too. The shop is quite big and as I will not be able to cover all the clothing corner, we decided to import one of my favorite European kids brands, which is Mim-Pi.
We already ordered the new spring/summer collection (sizes 4-10 years) and it is coming in February. How great is that?
We are planning a big opening on March 1st, but you will be informed and invited, of course:)

I am working on my first own collection too (I had the name "Capri" in mind for this first collection for such a long time) and hope to share some sneak peeks here soon.
I will be using mainly Tanya Whelan's fabrics, so it will be whimsy and girly with a shabby chic vintage twist.

Shinny leggings tutorial for the Happy New Year!!!

Hello friends!!!
We are in Italy, enjoying our family and Vacation time.

First and above all, I wanted to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

And than as promised, here is the leggings tutorial, step by step.
You can click on the thumbnails, to get the bigger preview. The pictures here are showing the leggings created in size 3/4 years.
As always, feel free to e-mail me with any suggestions and questions;)

Notes: if you don't have the serger, it is always better to use the zig zag stitch or stretch stitch, avoiding to get the broken stitches when the fabric is stretched.

Before cutting the fabric, remember to check the way fabric stretches, as the maximum stretch should be always used widthwise(horizontally) as will be going and will be stretched across the body. There are jersey and knit fabrics that are two ways stretched(like the one I used), but mostly they are just one way stretched and in those cases you should be careful with cutting directions.

You will need:

1 yard of jersey knit fabric(a bit less or more depending on the size...I made both pairs: sizes-3/4 and 9/10 with one yard only, as it was double way stretch jersey and the type of jersey I used is liquid lycra fabric, that can be purchased here, @ funkaliciousfabrics)
scissors or rotary cutter
sewing machine(serger is optional, but preferred)
stretch needle 70/10
thread and pins

It is very important to determine the measurements for the leggings:
1. for the waistband and
2. for the length

You can get those measurements from your child, using the tape measure and measuring all across the waist for the waistband and than for the length measuring from the waist to your desired length(it can be full length or 3/4 length). In my case, the waistband is 20" and the length is 21".

I've started using an existing pair of leggings(Hello Kitty ones)as a guide to create/draw the template-pattern for them, adding around 1/2" as seam allowance to all sides.

Here is the pattern/template I got for the body of the leggings(without the waistband), that was used for both sizes(with adding appropriate length of course and a bit more as seam allowance in larger size....around 1" more).Just note that one side is slightly deeper in rise/crotch part than the other side, so the deeper side will be used as the back part of the leggings.
As the fabric is folded(in direction that will respect the maximum stretch, but usually widthwise), cutting only one, you will get 2 reverse pieces for the body of the leggings.

Here are all the needed pieces: waistband, body of thee leggings and stripes for the ruffles.

If you want the ruffles at the bottom, you will need to make and sew them to the body of the leggings pieces before assembling them. So, you just need to cut the stripes that will be approx. 1 1/2" wide, lets say 2 stripes, using the max. length of the fabric(usually 54"). So, if the fabric is folded, cutting once, you will get 2 stripes.

Now, to ruffle the stripes, use the elasticized thread (hand wind a bobbin with the elasticized thread and put it in your machine) and make one row using the basic straight stitch in the middle of the stripes.

Using pins, pin the ruffles to the bottom of the main pieces (approx. 2" from the bottom line) and attach them using zig zag stitch. You can create only one or even 2 rows of ruffles, as I did.

At this point, you can pin insides of the main leggings parts (taking care of those ruffles ends to match), sew and serge in one continuous line from the bottom to the top.

Here are the pictures of: one leg sewed inside(sewed inside on the wrong, black side)and one still unsewed and both legs sewed, wrong and right sides.

Having both legs done it is time to sew them together.

Now, first pin and than stitch and serge the crotch parts of the legs turned both on the wrong sides.

You are almost done, now it is time to sew the waistband.

Cut the waistband piece, around 3" wide and 1-2" narrower in length than your kid's waist.(for example, as my daughter waist circumference is 20", my waistband piece was 18")

Press the waistband piece in half lengthwise, wrong sides together and pin it to the waist part of the legging.

Taking care that the seamed part of the waistband remains in the back(deeper part of tho crotch) and matches the back seam of the back side of the leggings, sew and serge the waistband.

Now finish the lower edges of the legs. Hem them using your preferable method( I usually do either the 1/2" serged, pressed and seamed edges or rolled hems with the serger).

Woodland doily animals fabric

I've received an early Xmas gift the other day and I was so happy about it!!!
I decided to order a custom printed fabric, based upon my doily woodland animals, to use it for some Xmas gifts and here is the result. It is very simple, made in 2 grey colours and just a basic, half-drop repeat print, just like the one I am using on Twitter for almost 2 years now:)

Unfortunately, due to the many activities, stomach bug, Xmas preps and very close trip to Italy (we are going on Wednesday)I didn't make it with sewing some samples and gifts, but will certainly do it once we are back home:)
I just wish I thought about it earlier.

I am also preparing a free tutorial for the girls New Years leggings and hope to finish it and post it before we leave.

Multi strand jersey scarfs

A few days ago, I found a great tutorial about creating a spaghetti necklace scarf at Retro chic UK blog.
I've seen something similar in some stores, mainly on-line, like Diesel, Urban outfitters and on etsy and so I thought I should give it a try in creating my version of it.

I had some jersey fabric (I used a tube fabric that was 40 cm large and the whole length -150 cm) and using a rotary cutter, it was pretty easy to create some of these unisex cozy scarfs. The only trick is to lengthen with hands the strings that was formed in the cutting process, in way that they obtain the rounded look(and that way, the raw edges tend to become almost invisible).It can be worn in more relaxed way (when forming the figure 8 just once), like a necklace or even 3 times rounded, becoming more like a collar scarf.

Have you noticed my mannequin? It is a BD present from my sister (kids size 5, 6, 7 yrs) and I am loving it (even that my kids think that it needs a head:)

Once upon a time

As I mentioned in my previous post, it's been a long time since I posted about something I created with the fabric and I must admit that once upon a time I sewed much more. Here you can see some pics of the outfit that was a custom design back in May and created for one little girl, age of 2.5, just a bit younger than Bianka (that was so sweet to model it for me). I think it was created for one of those pageant shows in the USA and I can only imagine how beautiful that little girl was, wearing it.

Something that goes well with this blog post title is also something neat that I created sometimes in July, for a very special friend of mine, that got married this summer with an Aussie guy:).

It was a perfect wedding, with many people from different parts of the world coming to assist and stay for some time in Belgrade.....and I had a pleasure of creating a nice little head fascinator piece, inspired by fantastic Philip Treacy .

And here is the detail of my dress that I wore and sewed especially for this event:)
(and if you may ask about the shoes, they are my favorite brand-Irregular choice , of course).

Necklaces

It's been a long time since I've posted something created with a fabric, and it's still on the very first place regarding my favorite arty-crafty materials. I am such a huge fan of the statement necklaces and I am always looking forward when getting custom orders for my button statement necklaces, using different patterned fabrics in aim to create something fun and unique to wear.

Regarding local shops where you can shop my stuff, such as Gradstor and Supermarket concept store , I had some requests to do the fabric button necklaces without the felt base, so finally I created a few and they are already on sale on those two above mentioned places:)

And here are a few skinny headbands that can go great with these new necklaces, very glam and can be great detail for the upcoming Holidays parties and festivities.

At the very beginning of this month, Alere Modern was opened. More than a year ago, I had a pleasure to chat with it's founder, adorable Caitlin when she said: "I found your work today and just love your animal and snowflake cut-outs. They're so beautiful. I am imagining having a house full of the snowflakes in the winter. It would be wonderful!"

That time of the year

My poor, neglected blog.....it is hard to believe that I've been away from blogging for almost 2 weeks, but I was extremely busy with so many different things, always trying to push myself too much in so many directions....
With Xmas and Holidays season, I had so many orders that I needed to take care of and we also had a huge studio move and I am still thinking about where and how to settle my printing press, as I really want to make some more prints with it in the future:)
I found so many drawings from elementary and secondary school and it made me think about the years and things behind.

In 2 days I will be one year older and I somehow just hate the fact that the time flies so fast....but, on the other hand to celebrate it, I will be doing next post as a Giveaway, including some of my ornaments;)

DOILY love

I had a thing for doilies.
For those following my work, it is well known:)
I have blogged about some doily inspiration a few times here and almost all of my work within the home decor field is based on the doily love as an immense source of the inspiration.
Also, being great fan of Tord Boontje's work and Marcel Wanders work, since the students days, I was easily taken with all the doily inspiration and dreams about what can be created using the doily, artistically and aesthetically.

Unfortunately, some dreams, ideas and plans in the pocket, can't be fulfilled so fast and easily, as the time to do things, in my case is very limited and I am giving my best to harmonize my time, being divided with professional and private obligations. And therefore, many ideas and plans are only slowly coming to life and here are a few waiting for so long to be finally realized...all having the doily somehow in common:)

I had a big pleasure this year to create this costume for Jess, one lovely little girl and Marta modeled it, before I did some final touches on the veil, upon Jess's request;)
Jess loved it and she will be wearing it for this Halloween.

RAIN FASHION – workshop by Vahida Ramujkić

On Monday, Marta and I had a pleasure of meeting lovely and so talented Vahida Ramujkic , designer behind the umbrella skirt project. We had a chance to make a chic skirt out of brought umbrella, with a little help from her professional assistance, ideal for rainy days or as a present.

Here is the exception from original text by Aviv Kruglanski:
"Autumn is here and after hot long summer clouds begin to gather. On rainy and windy days that are coming, textile ecology and GRAD deliver us a unique opportunity. The next time it pours, wait for it to calm down a bit, and walk out on the street fearless! It’s a perfect moment for umbrella “harvest”! We go out to “harvest”, “armed” with scissors or penknives in the raincoat. When we find a broken umbrella, we recover the fine material from the metal frame. At this point we are interested in the waterproof hexagonal material."

Red polka dots ornaments

Cake toppers

It's been a long time since I wanted and planned to do these. I had the request from the Brides magazine and now each couple of these is on its way to NYC. W'll see what happens:)

These animal figures can be used as a home decoration as well, perfect for gift giving.
I had many etsy convos in past, requesting my plexi ornaments without holes, so I think that these are the great addition.

Oh, and I finally made the packaging boxes for the ornaments that are made in natural craft cardboard, but will post the picture soon:) Hopefully will make some stamps soon as well.

Misty morning

Last week we had a lot of rain, and so I was able to take many pics of the rain drops in the spider webs, at Fruska gora. They are so inspiring, looking like the beads on the strand.

The only thing I can say is that I wish I had a macro lens!!!!

Tea party

During this summer, mostly during the month of July, I was intensively working on some new drawings, as I need to organize the solo exhibition next year. And that means that I firstly had to make the stuff to expose and than participate in the contest for the individual exhibitions and eventually win ( I will know that hopefully next week:)

The last individual exhibition I had was back in 2006. which makes a very big "hole" for my artistic carrier and even that I had many group exhibitions during each year, non having often solo shows may have the negative impact on my professional carrier as a teaching assistant (having solo exhibitions in the same teaching field is crucial for artists that teach something...as in that way we are "gaining the points", indispensable for eventual building up of the carrier:)

Ok, so I have imagined this exhibition as a Wonderland......from all the aspects....ideological, thematic and visual and I have prepared ten large drawings and a few smaller ones as part of this “Wonderland” cycle. I will not reveal the drawings now, even that some you may be able to see or here or in my flickr, but rather the 3D objects that will accompany the drawings.

They are imagined as the part of the ~~Mad~~ tea party and they wonderfully integrate the cycle and drawings, as are made with the same old graphic prints and pieces of papers and fabric. The tea party cups, plates and pots are firstly created with the simple cardboard and than are sculptured in Papier-mâché technique, previously with tin plain paper and than with different patterned papers.

This is only one set, that I truly enjoyed creating, playing with paper and fabric and can't wait to create the entire big set and hopefully to see it exhibited somewhere:)

Upside down

It is so weird how in just 2 weeks the things around has changed.
From the very beginning of this month, fall suddenly arrived. And for the first time after 9 years, I found myself being without kids at home during the morning, as Bianka started the kindergarten. It both made me feel very happy (as now I have more time to dedicate to house and my work), but also a bit sad knowing that they aren't so small any more.....and that they are growing so fast....
Hopefully I will be able to organize my sudden "free time" best possible and to recuperate some projects left on the way.....

Hello tinytoadstool

"Hello tinytoadstool" is an art project created and organized by fabulous Shan Shan that creates very original and gorgeous stuff, among them very beautiful felt berets.

Her art project named “hello, tinytoadstool" is conceived in way that the beret travels the world. It was firstly sent from Japan to Greece back in March this year.

The tinytoadstool beret is sent to a person, and after taking 3 photos, the person sends the beret to the next person……

The photos should be:
- first one is a self portfolio from the waist up with tinytoadstool beret on head.
- second one is a self portfolio in front of the symbol of it's country or town with the tinytoadstool beret on head.
- third one is conditions free

Two pics I've chosen including some sort of symbols of Belgrade are taken within one of the largest and most beautiful parks in Belgrade, Kalemegdan park.

So the monuments are:

Victor statue-"This statue, holding a dove of peace on one hand and a sword of war in the other hand, and looking forward across the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, and over the vast Pannonian plain, towards the very distant Fruška Gora mountain, towards at the time, Austro-Hungarian empire, is probably the most powerful, most popular visual symbol of Belgrade"

Nebojsa tower and view to the Danube river-" Nebojsa Tower was used as Turkish prison. It was Donjon at the time of Serbian kings. Famous Greek revolutionary and poet Rigas Feraios was killed here by Turks. Tower is build as a water tower.
It was set in waterline of Danube (in time of its construction river has some different course). It was connected via huge chain with U shaped tower (that only remains left) and thus closed little "hidden" port.
Tower itself changed its image very much from original - last floor is changed, tower lost crenelation and matriculation (terraces with holes in floor for defending purpose) and new tower get new openings in each floor for artillery use."

After the Vacation....

...it is always so hard for me to "face" the "normal" life and every day's situations, to realize that the Holidays and soon, summer is over and that I will be able to enjoy some more sea and friends only the next year:(

We really had a blast in Lukovo, Croatia. It is my absolutely favorite Vacation place, so peaceful and beautiful, almost antique in a way(there is no shop or anything else in the village, except one restaurant). The place that I have been so many times and spent so many summer Vacations, made some of the best life time friendships.

It was almost unreal to see the same happening now to my kids, playing at the same spots with other kids, enjoying the crystal sea and beautiful nature and also making some of the best long lasting friendships. Lukovo is sure to be one of those places that you immediately can feel like second home:)

DeAgostini Winnie de Pooh commercial

Sometimes during July, Pablo and Bianka were chosen to do the commercial for the Italian brand De Agostini, for making the short spot with Winnie de Pooh, Disney party/dinning supplies.

We had a wonderful time on the set, as it took place in one wonderful house, at Dedinje, Belgrade. The kids were able to play between the scenes, outside and they almost didn't wanted to leave the set once they were done.

The commercial is "in the air" now in Italy and here is how it look like.

Sunflower dress

I made for Marta this fun, twirly dress a few weeks ago and I took the advantage of the gorgeous sunflower field near our weekend house, at Fruska gora, to take some pics of it. There is another dress I made 3 years ago, also with the sunflower inspiration/surrounding.

The dress is made using different fabrics, but mainly Garden party fabrics by Anna Maria Horner. I love how whimsy it turned out and Marta is delighted with the twirl ability option:). I am planning to add it to my etsy shop, as soon as I will find a free time to do that( there is a lot of things happening here, as one of my friends is getting married on Saturday, so always have a lot of things to do:)

La vie en rose

We had a wonderful time last week, at Fruska gora. The weather was great, allowing us to enjoy the pool, and other activities out and inside the house.

I have finally started to draw and I am pretty satisfied with my studio over there, inspiration and among all, the possibility to be able to draw(while my kids are happily playing nearby).

It is incredible how some simple and ordinary things can sometimes fill you with happiness.

Like a piece of cake

When your kids don't like eating some lovely seasons fruits when are at home (they like to eat them when picking them up directly from the plants), you do your best to make them eat (because strangely you may feel like committing a crime if eating that precious, organic and full of vitamins fruit yourself).

So, making something yummy and tasty is a good step forward:)
Also, using simple ingredients is also a good way to achieve the goal. So, this is not a proper recipe for the strawberry and yogurt jelly cake, but more a suggestion how to prepare a simple, tasty, light summery cake, that your kids will eventually love:)

Using Dr Oetker gelatine sheets, just like suggested on the package(when dissolved in hot water and then cooled, it forms a jelly) you can obtain a very tasteful yogurt cream(of course with adding some sugar in the yogurt first and than adding the gelatin sheets previously dissolved in the water).
For the base of the cake, I used granulated biscuits mixed with some apricot juice( to obtain a solid mixture that can be used instead of the pastry). And for the top, just dissolve the gelatin into any clear juice(I used apple juice), and wait for about 30 min. (place it in the fridge) until it starts to jelly, so that you can place it on the top of the arranged fruit.

I am sorry if my English is sometimes giving me the hard time in giving you the proper explanations and recipes, even that I am hardly following any recipes and directions when cooking, as well as when sewing...I am always more visual person and like to use imagination, strongly liking to believe that I know what I am doing;)
So, I have tried to search on-line to provide some similar real recipe that can be eventually followed step by step and here are some versions and variations that can be useful:

1. Chilled yogurt cake
2. Mango yogurt pudding cake
3. Berry and banana terrine

An apple for the teacher

Today we took Marta's report card. She is excellent and she is really doing wonderful at school and she is so fond of her school, teachers and friends, which makes me very happy and proud of her:)

So, instead of bringing flowers to the teachers(she has 2 of them), we did some homemade stuff....of course with fabrics: Anna Maria's "Drawing Room" fabrics.
After doing brainstorming for the past few weeks about what to sew as appropriate present for them, I decided to go with the document duvets. And Marta really wanted to make a drawing for each of them. I was inspired with one of the Amy Butler's project from THIS BOOK (that happens to be one of my first craft/sewing books I bought... 2, 3 years ago) and I just had to add a few things, to make it be more practical, usable...in a multipurpose sort of way....(I don't know why, but I always strive to reach another purpose when designing something...or to add more, so that it could be used in other ways too...which sometimes, even that I really LOVE simplicity and simple things, leads me in overloading things....oh details...I also love sweet details:)

Anyway, I hope that they will love theirs duvets and will find a perfect way to use them:)

Buttons heaven

New buttons are ready to be used...for many crafty projects. I just love fabric buttons, it is always so neat to see how a small detail of fabric is looking good as a button and how different details of the same fabric can be so beautiful and unique. I always love to wear a button used as an whimsy accent in a jewelry piece and weather it is a brooch, earrings, headband, bracelet or necklace it is always great way to keep it in touch with your favorite fabrics and in a way even with favorite designers, people who created those gorgeous designs.

I was truly enjoying doing some pin tucking today for the white beach dress ordered through etsy

It always happens that when I prepare myself for drawing some new drawings (I need to prepare the exhibition next year), that I suddenly get a lot of orders that keep me in stitches.....but anyway, I preferred sewing than drawing during this week and these rainy days, as for drawing and painting I somehow get in better mood when having better light with some sunny days...coming soon......

Hello summer

It is the end of another school year and at this point after all the crazy weather and a few days spent working on another exhibition at the Faculty , I can absolutely say Hello to summer:) It is just too hot already!!!! So we literally jumped from boots into the flip flops.....and as I haven't share any shoe obsession lately , here is something that is on the top of my wish list for this summer:

New plexi polka dot stuff

I have finally some new plexi laser cuts to show off!!!This time I used red Plexiglas surface as the base and than had the white polka dots printed (screen print) as a pattern. I have played with two of my previously used animal shapes: deer and rabbit as the silhouettes within the circles.

I already have some of the polka dots ornaments in my etsy shop , but they are made differently, and they are also different in size, and have holes, too. I will try to add the new ones in the shop during this weekend:)
Still unsure how to list them, as they are offering many possibilities and can be used differently, so I will have to think about the best solutions/options.

Can hardly believe that I am having 3 posts in 3 days!!!The thing is that Marta has been away with her school for one week (they took them to Zlatibor where they had a great time) and she will be back any minute:)))))...so I suppose that I will be blogging once, twice a week, as usual:)

So here I am posting some new cool stuff I made for Mikser-Gradstor purpose, thinking about young people, music festivals, summer, travel etc.

I found these small cases very useful for handling small things, such as MP3 players, iPods, cell phones, money and similar stuff. I have been thinking about the pattern that wouldn't be too much a hassle to sew (talking about the small pieces gathering together) and yet nice to see and comfortable/versatile to wear. Also, that can be for man too (well I suppose not all of the styles I made;)

And for the end here are some neat earring studs, made with small, 1 cm fabric buttons, I just LOVE them:) Also available in Gradstor, Belgrade, for now;)
