Keep calm and ride on

The snow is completely melting, with shy periods of sun here and there....bringing so much hope that spring might be just around the corner...
Usually between work and family, I am trying to balance and be productive and efficient as much as I can in many different fields. Here are some of my recent designs, available @ Spoonflower.

They are part of my "Take a ride" collection, and the first print above is entered in this week's 3 color (limited palette) bicycle theme contest on Spoonflower.

Boy's tie tutorial

skull tie

ties

As promised, finally, here is the step by step tutorial for the Boy's tie, that will suite best a child aged 3-8 years. This template can be easily adjusted to fit babies or even adults by adjusting the lengths of both pieces, don't hesitate to ask for help in the comments;) I have also designed some other patterns to fit one yard of fabric (much more convenient option, as for the $18 you get 6 ties + bonus ball pattern) and was thinking to offer a custom-design it your self option through my etsy shop, but even through the Spoonflower-contact form. Any ideas... don't hesitate to contact me;)

I must say that my version of this pattern is adopted from the Ottobre design (where you can find the PDF format pattern by scrolling through the options until you see a graphic with a pink tie on the left and a multi-colored tie on the right), that I found via Sew mama sew blog a few years ago. Of course, I made a few changes and I adopted the easier velcro strap option, that is usually used for the boys neckties. Instead of using vecro, you can even use snaps as closure or you can even reduce the length of the neck strap in half and insert an approx. 4" piece of elastic in the strap's endings (just like when sewing the headband;)

tie and ball

You may find 2 sets with step by step pictures on my flickr: this one is related to my Spoonflower template including extra softie ball pattern and this one is created with other, camouflage fabric by R. Kaufman. I will use the pictures related to my fabric, except for some small details from other set, that will help things be clear.

tie and ball

Needed supply:

1. printed fabric sheet with template ( you can use the fabric type you prefer for the design to be printed on like: Quilting Weight Cotton, Organic Cotton Sateen or Kona Cotton and for the limited time even the great cotton poplin fabric would be perfect) including the instructions printed
2. sewing machine, thread, scissors
3. piece of Velcro or piece of elastic or snaps for closure
4. piece(in same size as the main piece from this pattern) of plain solid cotton

Tie template fabric

note: this above picture of the actual fabric was a sample I received, that after testing it, I enriched with some text-explanations and small embellishments and now it looks like this:

tie and ball cut and sew pattern- template

Each fabric template sheet is created as 18 x 21" (size of the Fat Quarter) and includes the sewing instructions. So beside the fabric FQ, you will need either Velcro tape for closure or piece of elastic or snaps. Also, you'll need an additional piece of fabric for the lining, that will need to be as well cut on bias, so you can calculate an additional FQ of some solid cotton fabric, medium weight, any colour you prefer (I am always using white).
Very important thing to do before starting to sew is to wash the fabrics, the template fat quarter piece and the additional lining piece as they will shrink and in that way there will no be unpleasant surprises with shrinkage after you get the final product, and as this item is designed for kids, washing fabrics before use is always recommended:)

So here we go:

tie and ball template22

After washing and ironing the fabrics, cut all the pieces. Using the main tie piece (marked as 1 TIE), cut on bias the same shaped piece out of the additional plain cotton fabric (previously washed).

tie and ball template21

So here we have all pieces ready to start sewing, (even the 6 ball pieces):

tie and ball template20

Place the both main tie (TIE 1) pieces, (printed one and lining piece) on the top of each other, right sides together and sew the triangular ends(corners) together using 1 cm seam allowance

tie and ball template18

stitch the neck part: fold this neck piece in half, lengthwise, right side inside and sew along the long side using 1 cm seam allowance

tie and ball template17

clip the corners and turn the main piece inside out and also turn the neck tube piece inside out using the safety pin

tie and ball template16

press the both tie pieces and at this point I suggest finishing the neck part (it is that smaller tube piece) that only needs to have sewn the lateral (small) ends shut, sewing the small rectangular ( approx. 3-4 cm x 1-2 cm) piece of the velcro on each edge on the opposite sides, checking that the closure will be right

tie33

if you like, when sewing the lateral edges and adding the velcro (or elastic if you prefer that way) you can insert in one side some tag, ribbon or other embellishment(you can use those small ladybugs or lions printed on the template to use as inserts)

now we just need to finish the main piece:)

tie and ball template15

fold the main piece in half lengthwise, right side inside and sew it along the edge(be sure that all 4 layers are lined), starting from about 2-3 cm inside from the edge (doing back stitch) that will allow turning the tie piece inside out without tearing it

tie and ball template14

tie and ball template13

iron the seams open and then using the safety pin, turn it inside out and iron it well

tie and ball template12

tie and ball template11

tie and ball template10

now you only need to tie the 2 pieces as shown on the drawing:
