Mediterraneo

It's been a while since updating or posting here, but I suppose it's better later than ever;)
My current collection with Art Gallery Fabrics was out in late April and it's called Mediterraneo.
The first image is the Soleil quilt, that is a free pattern, that can be downloaded HERE

Mediterraneo by Katarina Roccella

Inspired with childhood memories and summers spent in some places along the Mediterranean coast, this collection takes you to the beautiful journey spiced with typical Mediterranean fruits and flowers, in shades of navy, magenta and hints of tangerine. It has two color groups: Maddalena gateway and Marrakesh escape.

Here are two original watercolor paintings that were used for my favourite Frutteria print.

Fabric design process

During the last weekend, when I took over the AGF instagram account, I was talking a bit about my design process, so I thought to post a few pics about that, here too.

I start by hand drawing, sketching and painting, surrounding me with inspiration and depending on the theme, it can be "real life" or some historical pictures from books and/or internet.

Very often, I use my own photographs, processing them in Photoshop, developing new images, placing them in repeats.

But, mostly I scan my original art and I make patterns with them, always in Photoshop (I don't like to use vector images), as it's giving me the possibility to work in layers, with lots of textures, preserving the "organic look" of the shapes.

After obtaining the final image, and making the repeating tile (or block) out of it, I start developing the color palettes.

I often use some pictures of nature to create the appropriate palettes and mood boards.

Of course, I make about 3 times more prints in order to obtain a good 10 prints, indispensable for one collection.

This is pretty much how I work to develop my collections.
If you have any questions, I would love to hear in the comments ;)

Happy dots

dots and triangles

I've been having some thoughts and issues with me and my color selection, regarding the textiles....I can not explain why my color choices are so saturated and vivid when it's the field of the textile design, while with my paintings I tend to go almost monochrome...fearing maybe that color may be competitive with forms and shapes....

Anyhow, as I started un-checking the fabric option in my Spoonflower shop, as said before, I arrived to some of my dots designs. The collection is called Lots of dots (and you can still buy them as wallpaper, wall decal or gift wrap....) and the point is the use of color and colors here.

Triangles!

Looking at this (almost forgotten) collection, I realized how weird is that sometimes the answers to our questions may be just in front of us, waiting to be re-discovered. Not sure if I managed to explain myself in English, but I am so grateful that I cleared some things to me ;)

Somethin's cookin'

Hi friends!!! Just realized that I haven't posted anything for more than 2 weeks...my last post was at the beginning of this month and now we are approaching to March so fast! I am studying and writing for my PhD exams and also studying and writing some more -regarding something very exciting that has been cooking for a long time. I still can't say what's the buzz all about, but all I can say for now - especially to my dear Spoonflower customers is that I will very soon stop selling my fabric designs through Spoonflower. That means that I will un-check the fabric option from my Spoonflower shop, while my designs on all the other 3 mediums: wallpaper, gift wrap and wall decals will still be available for purchase.

Also, please add your projects to my flickr group , dedicated to the Spoonflower stuff-fabrics, wallpapers etc. (all the pics in this post are courtesy of the wonderful people that created them using my designs and you can click on the pics to find out more)

And thank you so much to all of you that have already added them, it means so much to me to see the "fabric in action" and here are some wonderful projects that some of you wonderful people made with my designs:)

Geek chic

collection geek chic

This week we have a great new contest @Spoonflower, and there are many fabulous designs already! I was looking forward doing some more designs with mustaches and glasses, as some of my best sellers @Spoonflower are the designs featuring these geek motifs.

  geek chic collection

For this collection, I have envisioned designs that can be easily used for both genders. Firstly, I wanted to create something with Nikola Tesla in mind, one of the greatest Serbian minds ever. But, than I decided to take the different direction, and I combined hexies, letters, 2D bar codes, glasses, mustaches, maths and similar geek things. I wanted my main design to be some sort of the modern damask with those elements, but now (still haven't entered any design) I am just not sure. I think I'll enter some of the simpler designs, probably hexies. Here are the designs and the entire collection, that will be available for sale soon @Spoonflower.

Anemones

anemone
The thing that I missed so much recently was doing some fabric design. So, within past few days I've started working on some new designs as I was longing a long time to do some bold floral prints.
